4:00 PM FILM DISTRIBUTION AS SEEN BY THE PRODUCER (LA DISTRIBUZIONE CINEMATOGRAFICA VISTA DAL PRODUTTORE)

After meeting with documentary film distributors and subsequently with exhibitors, Mente Locale turns the floor over to producers to share their experiences in distributing their own films. A series of case studies will provide a concrete, in-depth look at the strategies developed, the mistakes made, and the results achieved—both economically and in terms of outreach and promotion. From these examples emerges a clear picture of how long, arduous, and obstacle-ridden the path can be, yet also how a necessity can be transformed into a virtue.

DIFFICULT COEXISTENCE (CONVIVENZE DIFFICILI)

Who is out of place, humans or coypus?

Film screening and Q&A with the filmmakers

The film stems from an animal considered inconvenient, ugly, and unwanted: the coypu (nutria). Brought to Italy for the fur industry and left stranded by a failed economic system, today it lives alongside us—often barely tolerated, and even more often hated.

The documentary uses the coypu as a starting point—and as a narrative pretext—for a journey across landscapes, stories, and people, questioning what it truly means to coexist. Who decides who is out of place? Who has managed to adapt, and who hasn’t? How much do appearance, origin, and labels matter?

The film is a journey gathering testimonies from Chiara Grasso, Panci Spanci, Samuele Venturini, Loris Vezzali, and Osvaldo the coypu. Everything is framed in a joyful setting by Guetty Sini, with music by Hakuna Matata.

Among riverbanks, countryside, suburbs, and everyday stories, the coypu becomes a mirror for other forms of marginalization: human, social, and cultural. The film alternates observation, irony, and moments of reflection, avoiding preachy tones and leaving room for the absurd, the ridiculous, and laughter.

A lighthearted yet thoughtful documentary that uses a “wrong” animal to talk about a humanity that often no longer knows where it is heading. Or, as Pasolini put it: Where is humanity going? Who knows.

The film was made by Francesca Ballabeni, Andrea Barilli, Lavinia Bertolini, Martina Ghidoni, Francesco Giovanelli, Isabel Lana, Laura Marchetti, and Boris Siciliano, with artistic supervision by Alessandro Scillitani.
